Upcoming Workshops:
June Educator Workshop
Date: Monday, June 29th 2026
Time: 2:00pm - 3:00pm EST
Location: Virtual
Registration Link: https://columbiauniversity.zoom.us/meeting/register/EqaMsWoFRwax-EasCaagag#/registration
Description:
This summer, we will host two workshops for educators, taking place on June 29th and July 30th. Both events will occur virtually at 2pm EST. These sessions are designed for educators who are interested in incorporating modeling volcanic processes on VICTOR into their undergraduate or graduate coursework. Participants will receive an overview of the platform, learn about our available educational materials, and have an opportunity to try out the tools for themselves. Educator workshops are also a great place to discuss course-specific needs with our team. Register for the June Educator Workshop here!
Modelling the Behaviour of Volatiles in Magmas
Date: Sunday, July 12th 2026
Time: 9:00am - 4:00pm EST
Location: Hybrid - in-person at McGill University (Montréal, Canada) and Virtual
Registration Link: https://forms.gle/Yan9pr7apt6JJMc38
Description:
This workshop, hosted by some of our collaborators at Goldschmidt 2026, will provide an interactive learning opportunity for modeling volatile behaviors in magmas. Please note that the workshop is free and participants need not be signed up for the conference to attend the event (for both in-person and virtual options). Register for the event here, and please see the workshop description below:
The workshop will begin with an overview of natural volcanic degassing processes and the current state of in situ and satellite‑based monitoring techniques. A series of structured presentations will provide insights into case studies from natural volcanic systems. Topics will include gas measurements during monitoring, experimental approaches (including melt and fluid inclusion analyses), sulfur partitioning, Raman‑based SO₂/CO₂ speciation, current challenges in calibrating and applying numerical models, as well as modelling chlorine and hydrothermal systems.
Participants will also engage in guided group exercises run through VICTOR designed to reproduce benchmarking results, compare methodological approaches, and identify priorities for improving data quality and model performance. Outcomes from these activities will contribute to an updated Workshop White Paper, helping to shape collective standards and future directions.
All researchers, students, and professionals engaged in volcanic gas studies are encouraged to attend this collaborative event.
This workshop is supported by a Catalyst: Seeding grant from the Royal Society Te Apārangi (Aotearoa New Zealand).

Developer Hackathon (3-day Workshop)
Event: "2nd VICTOR Developer workshop: making your tools easily accessible to the community"
Dates: Wednesday-Friday, November 4-6th, 2026
Location: University of South Florida
Registration Link (due August 15th): https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSes_rOv5xYxTUItHAFV6QWBphiIogMjOhWz8qNPstTM6MA1YA/viewform
Description:
This second workshop for developers is based on the success of the first VICTOR developer workshop that was held in LDEO at Columbia University in August 2024. The workshop aims to gather developers together to spend time integrating their tools onto VICTOR and increasing the visibility and accessibility of these tools. The workshop is funded by the US National Science Foundation, and we will cover part of the travel costs. A selection of 10-15 funded participants will be made soon after the registration deadline. Funding will cover up to $500 for domestic participants and up to $1,000 for international participants. Priority will be given to graduate students and early-career researchers, as well as volcano observatory staff members, who are currently developing codes and tools related to volcanic processes. We also welcome self-funded participants!
During the workshop, participants will first present their goals and plans to achieve them. Then, sufficient time will be dedicated to both individual and group brainstorming, coding/testing/standardizing, and potentially even code publishing on the VICTOR hub! Also, overview presentations about cloud computing, computational methods, open science and VICTOR current capabilities will be given and shared with everyone on our VICTOR website. This combination of activities will provide participants with a multifaceted experience which we trust will promote learning and induce high community-sharing stimulus! A detailed schedule will be provided closer to the workshop date.
Register here by August 15th.
Past Workshops:
The VICTOR team hosted a week-long workshop from August 11-15, 2025 at USF's Field Station in Mackay, Idaho. The workshop included two days of visiting volcanic field sites, and three days of computational exercises using VICTOR. Participants simulated a variety of magmatic and volcanic processes as well as accessed and analyzed remote-sensing data from recent eruptions.
The VICTOR Team hosted a webinar on June 2nd and July 8th 2025 to demonstrate the content available to support educators in incorporating VICTOR into their courses to teach about volcanic processes.

Workshop Agenda:
The overarching goal of the workshop was to work with participants toward integrating their software tools into the VICTOR platform.
Day 1 began with an introduction to VICTOR and a hands-on activity using it, followed by short (5-7 minute) presentations by each participant about the tools they brought to the workshop. Participants then defined their goals and plans for the rest of the workshop. A keynote lecture was given on topics related to open science.
Day 2 focused on working towards the participants' goals, with brainstorming, coding, testing, and fun altogether. Another keynote lecture was held about computation and data science.
On Day 3, participants presented progress towards their goals, demonstrated the use of their tools, and made plans for follow-up developments.
The inaugural VICTOR workshop was held on August 9th-11th 2023 at Tufts University.
